Karen Pierpoint provides psychotherapy as part of the treatment for many different issues. She does not treat clients who suffer from psychotic or delusional disorders. She can be of assistance to families with a loved one who does, however, in improving the practical family dynamics needed to manage such a situation.

Is There a Doctor in the House?

Since she is not a physician, Karen Pierpoint will not attempt to treat any of the physical components of a client’s condition, but will refer you to trusted medical personnel who can prescribe appropriate medications when these are needed. She strongly believes in collaborating with other professionals who may be involved in your over-all care, and does not charge you extra fees for making necessary contact with or writing routine reports needed for these consultations.

Your Mileage May Vary

Karen Pierpoint has received training in psychodynamic, interpersonal, family, and cognitive therapies. She uses a combination of approaches, depending on your situation. Some people only need therapy for a few visits, but others may need therapy for a longer time in order to maintain their improvement. You and she can determine the length of time your therapy will require as you discuss it together.

Philosophy of Care

Karen’s philosophy of client care includes being available by voicemail or e-mail outside the regular appointment hours. She limits her practice to the number of clients for whom she can adequately provide this quality of care. She believes that this policy allows a client to continue the process of learning and applying what was discussed during the therapy hour. If a client abuses this availability, it is a therapeutic issue that can be used to help that client learn appropriate boundaries in relationships.

Emergencies

In the event of a clinical emergency, Karen Pierpoint provides professional coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week for established clients. She does not respond to pages from anyone who is neither a client nor the immediate family member of a client. Others are advised to dial 911 or proceed to the nearest emergency room.
